Your search result has a headline. It is a line of code called the title tag, and it is the first thing a homeowner reads about you. You can check yours in about five minutes, on your phone, without paying anyone.

How to check

  1. Search your own business name plus your town, in an incognito or private browser window. The private window matters — it stops your own history from flattering the result.
  2. Look at the first line of your result. Does it say what you do and where? Or is it blank, or just your domain name?
  3. Do it again for the thing a customer would actually search: "roofer Sanford", "septic pumping Dunn". That search is the one that matters, not your business name.

What you are looking for

Ideally the line reads like a sentence a customer would understand: what you do, and the town you do it in. If it reads as a blank line, a bare domain name, or a string of keywords jammed together, it is costing you clicks — not because Google punished you, but because the result looks like a business that closed.

What not to conclude

Do not conclude your whole site is broken because of one line, and do not run out and buy a search package over it. This is one line. It is worth fixing because it is cheap, not because it is magic.

If it is blank and you want a second pair of eyes, the form below comes straight to me and I will tell you what I see — including if the answer is "yours is fine."
