When a homeowner searches for a trade in a small town, the result list is the first impression. The first line of that list is the page title. One line, and for a surprising number of real trade sites, it is blank.
What an empty title actually looks like
Some sites carry the business name only in a place search engines do not use for the result headline. The tag they do use is empty. To a searcher, that renders as an empty line where the business name should be — followed by a URL and a snippet.
It does not read as a technical problem. It reads as a dead, abandoned, or amateur business. So they scroll to the next one. That is a call lost before anyone clicked anything.
Why it happens
Usually it is not neglect — it is a site built by a template, or by a builder that never asked for a title, or by someone who filled in the visible headline and assumed that was the same field. It is a five-minute fix once you know where to look.
The honest part
I found this on real trade sites in NC while auditing them. I did not fix those sites — I do not touch a site nobody has asked me to touch. I am naming the pattern, not claiming those businesses as clients.
One caveat worth stating: a missing title has to be checked on the live page, not in the page source. Some sites generate that line with JavaScript, and a quick source read gets it wrong. I have been burned by that check myself.
